Included Smokies

These pages contain all our smoky quartz (and other minerals that have smoky quartz aspects within them ) that contain inclusions within them. Please bear in mind that it is not always easy to identify inclusions within a mineral unless you are an experienced mineralogist and can examine a specimen under a microscope or break it down and test it in the laboratory. Most items in this section have either been identified by the wholesaler/mine as being a particular mineral or examined by us, using our experience of the forms in which specific inclusions are found. Accordingly all descriptions are given in good faith, but the exact nature of any inclusion can not be guaranteed.
Generally, the rule when working with included crystals is to know what each mineral is and what its attributes are, and to understand that the base energies of the crystal will be enhanced / adjusted accordingly. Along with other members of the quartz family, it is common to find smoky quartz with inclusions: many crystals have deep golden-yellow, red or orange areas within or just below their surface - these are likely to be iron deposits, which may look rather "smeary" or liquid; some have small white snowballs in/on them - these are likely to be okenite; some exhibit rutilation in shades of silver, copper, bronze or gold, or tourmaline needles - usually black. Other inclusions include hematite (usually small silvery metallic flecks or spots); lepidocrocite (usually small red or orange flecks or spots); phantom inclusions (commonly exhibiting "layers" of clear, milky or amethyst quartz - or more rarely citrine); air or water inclusions, resulting in skeletal layering and / or enhydro formation (these are comparatively common within smoky quartz, but remain rare and very sought after crystals!)
