Iolite can be found in crystal form, but these are rare and quite expensive. These are sometimes called "water sapphires" and are popular in the gem trade. Most of the tumbled and polished iolite material comes from massive deposits of silicate material. Colours range from cornflower-blue, through to indigo and blue-violet. Accordingly this stone is useful for supporting the throat, 3rd eye and crown chakras, and as such makes a valuable meditation and journeying tool. Its depth and opacity indicate that it may assist with inward journeying, looking at the Self in depth and searching out ones hidden needs and desires. It can also support connecting with the Higher Self and with higher wisdom and guidance.
When the iolite combines with orange/red platelets of hematite and/or goethite the solar plexus and sacral chakras are also activated, making it easier to ground the information or knowledge, so that it is more accessible and meaningful. This material is sometimes called iolite-sunstone and combines the attributes of iolite with that of sunstone, uniting night and day; thought and action. This combination is particularly useful for all those who create through words, music or art of any form, as it aids free thinking and free expression and supports making ideas and thoughts become reality.
N.B: the proportion of sunstone varies from stone to stone, however all items shown as iolite-sunstones do have some schiller.
